Appraisal Overview

Appraisal Type

There are 2 types of appraisals formally defined:

Formal appraisal

A formal appraisal should be considered if you require a detailed appraisal and/or you are considering embarking on a path to certification. This type of appraisal will provide you with a gap analysis together with the improvements required to achieve your desired level of maturity.

Team Leader Team Size Team Members Evidence Collected Maturity Rating
Lead Appraiser At least 2 Lead Appraiser or Appraiser Staff interviews and documents required. Other type of corroborative evidence can also be used – e.g., questionnaires, customer surveys, etc. Verifiable benchmark rating of the organization (as defined in the scope of the appraisal) against SEMM is produced, with areas of strength and weakness identified in great detail, and full gap analysis presented

Informal appraisal

An informal appraisal should be considered if you are after an indicative rather than formal detailed maturity rating.

Team Leader Team Size Team Members Evidence Collected Maturity Rating
Appraiser At least 1 Lead Appraiser, Appraiser or experienced agile coach One type of non-corroborative evidence – e.g., staff interviews, documents, questionnaires, customer surveys, etc. – is required No formal rating against SEMM is produced. Utilized mainly to gain an understanding of an organizational area’s maturity level (including recommendations) – thus useful for internal appraisals
