About Scrum Enterprise

What is Scrum Enterprise?

Scrum Enterprise refers to a company or organization that thrives in uncertain and dynamic environments by leveraging Lean, Agile, and Scrum principles and practices. It drives change, creates value, and maintains competitiveness through adaptive planning and rapid feedback. A Scrum Enterprise embraces Lean and Agile thinking and upholds the core values of Scrum at every level of the organization. This mindset ensures the enterprise remains adaptable, fosters innovation, and pursues continuous improvement in all aspects of its operations.

What is the Scrum Enterprise Model (SEM)?

The Scrum Enterprise Model (SEM) is a lightweight enterprise management framework based on Scrum theory, Lean-Agile thinking, and proven management best practices. It is designed for enterprise-wide management in large-scale organizations, integrating approaches such as Scrum, design thinking, systems thinking, lean and agile practices, innovation methods, and strategic management principles into one cohesive model. SEM provides a structured yet flexible framework that guides enterprises in applying Agile values beyond individual teams, aligning the entire organization with Agile and Scrum methodologies.

Core Components of SEM: The model consists of a central engine powered by Lean-Agile thinking, Scrum theory, and Scrum Enterprise values, supported by five core capabilities and 21 practice domains. These five core capabilities form a unified structure for the enterprise (envisioned as a central core with two wings) and include:

  • Agile Organization, Culture, and Leadership (Core Entity): Establishes an adaptive organizational structure, agile company culture, and visionary leadership committed to Scrum values and Agile principles.
  • Agile Strategy and Portfolio Management (Left Wing): Aligns business strategy with agility, managing portfolios and initiatives in an adaptive, value-driven manner.
  • Agile Product Development (Left Wing): Delivers products and services iteratively and incrementally, using Scrum to respond to change and customer feedback rapidly.
  • Lean and Digital Operations (Right Wing): Optimizes operational processes through Lean principles and digital innovation, eliminating waste and improving efficiency across the enterprise.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement (Right Wing): Fosters a culture of ongoing learning, feedback, and refinement, ensuring the organization constantly adapts and improves its practices.

SEM focuses on defining essential principles and capabilities rather than prescribing one-size-fits-all solutions for any specific industry. It provides a foundational model that each enterprise can tailor to its unique context. A maintained SEM practice repository supports this framework by offering up-to-date, adaptable solutions and best practices that evolve with industry trends. This repository helps enterprises implement the Scrum Enterprise Model effectively, enabling them to remain innovative and competitive in a rapidly changing business environment.
